As an independent discipline, rhythmic trainin lies somewhere between the fields of movement, music, nursery rhymes and singing. In the context of the EMO syllabus, the rhythmic courses represent a new, creative, sensuous form of expression. Lessons introduce the technique of body percussion, which allows pupils to access the many different sounds of the human body. Rhythms are created by tapping your fingers, clapping, stamping your feet and drumming your chest and thighs. Classes also give pupils the opportunity to explore the art of African djembe drumming, and a set of Japanese Taiko drums will soon expand the group’s complement of percussion instruments even further. Lessons include creative movement and improvisation, exercises aimed at developing hand and foot coordination, as well as concentration and form-perception exercises.
Rhythmic training groups are available to cater for everyone from the age five to adulthood. Performing ensembles include trEMOlo and the adult group EllunKanat. A range of other groups also perform as part of the rhythm and dance shows at the end of each term.

Dance
EMO’s dance instruction features a selection of courses on contemporary dance. Our contemporary dance courses comprise adaptations of modern and jazz dance, improvisation, and a variety of strength building, stretching, relaxation and breathing exercises. At the end of each term, the dance groups perform what they have achieved at our Christmas and spring shows.
